Laysan Albatross Pair in Hawaii

The main purpose of my last visit to Kaena Point (Oahu, Hawaii) was to photograph an albatross chick and to see how it is growing. When I finished working with it, I found this Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) pair and wanted to take some close up photos of them. Like most native Hawaiian birds, Laysan Albatrosses don’t fear of humans, so I was able to approach them and photograph this kind moment, called billing. Billing is when the bird extends its head and gently touches the partner’s bill. I felt lucky to photograph this emotional situation.

Gear: Canon EOS 7D, Canon 300mm F/4 lens, Canon 1.4x extender, Manfrotto tripod.
