Feeding Laysan Albatross Chick in Hawaii

Last week I went to Kaena Point again to see what was going on in the Laysan albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) colony. The chicks are already hatched a few weeks ago and I was hoping to see an adult albatross feeding its chick. Laysan albatrosses usually leave the chick for days at a time to hunt for food. When a parent returns to its nest it feeds the chick with regurgitated food, mainly squid oil. I’ve spent many time among albatrosses in the last few years, but I’ve never seen feeding birds. Until last week, when I arrived at the perfect time and finally was able to see and document this behavior.
