2020: The Year in Review

2020 was a crazy year for all of us with the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic. We had to change or postpone most of our plans. I didn’t go out doing nature photography as much as I had planned. I occasionally visited some local parks for bird photography and went for a fall vacation to Maine with Gabi. I spent a lot of time upgrading my photo equipment, though. I did lots of research and spent many hours on eBay. Since I started doing film photography again, I wanted a larger lens for wildlife photography so I bought a used Canon 500mm f/4 lens. It’s the first generation 500mm f/4 and I love it. I already used it for both bird and wildlife photography. It’s very sharp, has fast autofocus, and works perfectly well with my 1.4x extender.

With this big lens, I also had the opportunity to switch from my beloved APS-C system to a fullframe camera. A week after I got the 500mm lens, Canon decided to discontinue manufacturing the EOS 5Ds camera, so there was a huge discount on the remaining stock of these oldish cameras. I’m not the type of photographer who always wants to own the latest gear, so after careful consideration, I decided to buy one. I believe it’s gonna be perfect for my style of photography. It’s not only a great landscape camera, but for me it’s a good bird and wildlife camera as well. I don’t shoot high-speed action, but I often photograph small birds and sometimes wildlife that are far away, so the ability to crop from the 50 megapixel file is great for me. I still need to buy some other stuff, like a new tripod head and maybe even a lighter tripod for backpacking, a new camera bag, etc., but these are plans for the next year.

I wish everyone a Happy New Year!
